Quintessential Nantucket Beach Portrait

It's a gorgeous summer on Nantucket and capturing the kids during their short childhood is what we're up to these evenings on the beaches. The soft light is really warm and delicious these days around 7:00 PM so if you can feed your kids early and promise ice cream later then this is the magic hour. Here little Mya is at her best and she is herself with sandy hands and windblown hair. Her brother Ryan is pretty darn cute too. Check out more of our portraits on our website. We have two photographers offering portrait packages at two different price points. Oh, and call soon as we're booking up fast!

Giving You Back Your Day Through My Eye...

Ah, to capture the not-so-obvious. That is what it is all about when the photographer delves deeper into the wedding day of her client. What I strive to do is to capture all the elements of your wedding day, the details, the portraits and the moments. This blog entry is about the moments, the not-so-obvious moments and for that you have to be completely zoned in on the moments and not let yourself float off into oblivion, but to stay present, focused on the now. It sounds obvious and easy, but it's a practice, it's a discipline, it's an art. It's my practice and my zen to fall into your day and be there for you. Here are a few moments that I captured at recent weddings. And the last shot is one my second shooter caught of me completely immersed in my work.

Nantucket Family Portraits!

I have been photographing Fletcher and his family on Nantucket since he was two. Well, what I mean is that I have been photographing Fletcher and mom and dad since he was two and then his two subsequent sisters once they appeared on the scene! What fun to document their childhoods on our beautiful island. This year we decided to use the wonderful Nantucket wharves are our backdrop and add a little new spice to the Nantucket beach portrait concept. When we photograph our families on the the island we always do the kids individually, together and with parents. It's a way to freeze time and that very special stage of their lives as they grow into young adults. It's both fun and an honor for me to give each family a little bit of time back to them.

Part One: Leading up to the Big Moment!

There is a wonderful opportunity to be creative during the bride's preparation and during the "reveal" when the bridal couple sees each other for the first time. The excitement and emotion are evident here as Alexa and Evan begin their day. The first shots are from the bridal suite at the Boston Harbor Hotel. My wonderful second shooter, Mark Crosby, got the adorable black and white of the bridesmaids looking out over the harbor. (He also shot image 9 &10 during the reveal). Then during the reveal the videographer, Jason Falchuk of Boston Wedding Films, asked Alexa to tap Evan on the shoulder. This built up the excitement even more. Couples are choosing to see each other before the ceremony more and more these days. It serves at least two purposes: to make the moment more relaxed, fun and intimate and to take the formal photographs before the ceremony so as not to miss any of the cocktail party.
Stay tuned for Part Two of this wedding to follow, but first I must mention some of our fabulous vendors: Luiz of Luz Beauty did an outstanding job on Alexa's hair and makeup. Linnea and her team of Tangorra Wedding Planning were always calm, always present and extremely helpful. John and Sarah of Spruce Floral rocked the decor, Jenny's Wedding Cakes took the cake, Suzanne Lowell lit up the house in her usual glory and Courtney Gould and her entire team at the Boston Harbor Hotel couldn't have been more professional and honestly wonderful to work with.

Nantucket Newborns!

With our Milestone Package I usually venture into the newborn's home, but lately I've taken on a new challenge and have had the parents bring the babies into the studio. Here in the studio, even if the babies aren't "controlled", the lighting can be! What I mean to say is that babies will be babies and definitely won't sleep on demand and they want to eat NOW! Saying that, these newborn sessions require a bit of time and patience on the part of the model, the parents and, lastly, myself. They are worth every minute of it because capturing little Sofia here at three days old and then Harper at one month old show the difference four weeks can make in a baby's life.
I had to include this shot of the disgruntled Sofia. Not sure she liked my new prop which was supplied by baby Harper's mom the day before. It's always a challenge to get the shot between feedings, changing and crying, but I'll take it on any day of the week (except maybe Saturdays when I'm likely to be shooting a wedding!)

Libby's Nantucket Engagement Session

The other evening Libby took Ashley and Harrison to some wonderful Nantucket locations. Their wedding, which is coming up in June, is going to be in town so it's always fun to go out to a different part of the island for the engagement session. I love what they chose to wear and the diversity of the spots chosen for their portraits! Congratulations Ashley and Harrison: see you in June!
